Shawn touched down in Philly a little after 3am. Chanda called her father to see if she could bring the children by so she could be with Shawn at the hospital with Jamal. After dropping them off and booking a hotel room, they managed to dodge the media as they made their way to Abington Memorial Hospital to see Jamal.

Shawn looked at Maurice and Deisha leaning on each other sleeping. He noticed a few guys from the neighborhood that were still there as well and finally saw Jamal’s wife, Tiffany. They walked over to her. As soon as Tiffany saw Shawn, she burst into tears. Shawn hugged her.

“How is he?” Chanda asked.

Tiffany shook her head. “There are so many tubes going in and out of him and he’s hooked up to so much. I want to hold him and let him know that I’m here and I love him but I’m afraid to touch him.” She sniffed and wiped her eyes. “The doctors don’t expect him to make it to the morning and right now, I’m just counting the minutes and begging God for another hour as they pass by.”

“Is my mom here?” Shawn asked.

“She went to get some coffee for her and some tea for me. I can’t believe this is happening,” Tiffany said in tears.

Chanda hugged her and rubbed her back. “It’s going to be okay. Jamal is a fighter. He loves you, he love’s y’all son and he’s going to fight to get through this. Trust me.”

Tiffany nodded her head trying to stay strong. Shawn heard his wife’s words of encouragement and he held onto them as he believed the same thing. But when he opened the door to Jamal’s hospital room, all hope was dashed.

“Oh…” he mumbled. He froze where he was standing as he looked his older brother over and the very real possibility that Jamal could die hit him like a ton of bricks. He trembled as he stood there, unable to take any steps towards his brother to sit by him. He felt Chanda rub his back and jumped.

“Sit with him, Shawn. Tell him you’re here.” Chanda said softly as she sniffed back her tears.

Shawn managed to walk over to his brother and sat in a chair next to him but didn’t know what to say. He listened to the machines and looked at all of them, using them as a distraction so he did not have to look at the bad shape his older brother was in.

A nurse came in and began checking his vitals. She glanced at Shawn not recognizing him at first and then did a double take.

“Oh my God! You’re Shawn Williams that play for the Miami Heat! Oh my God! I’m such a huge fan of yours! I’ve seen all of your games and you are just so cool to watch. Oh my God! My brother is going to FA-LIP when I tell him I met you. Can you sign…” the young nurse caught herself when she saw the pain in Shawn’s face.
